Over a Decade of helping locals

Nexus Care is an innovative, not-for-profit organisation caring for the northern suburbs of Brisbane and beyond.

Since opening the doors to the original Everton Park site in 2011, Nexus Care has become known around the city for its high-quality care programs and services. Increasing demand for the charity has continued to grow year upon year and in early May 2022, a second site in Sandgate opened.

Nexus Care uses people-focused and evidence-based services to empower individuals and their families. The charity reaches out to our local community, helping to relieve poverty and distress by mobilising volunteers around high-quality, sustainable care programs. We work in partnership with other organisations, businesses, and the government.

Inspired by our faith in Christ, Nexus Care is passionate about seeing people journey towards wholeness and finding a fresh start in life.

Nexus Care is a Public Benevolent Institution. Inc Number: IA 12146

WHAT WE DO

REPORTING THE GOOD STUFF

Since 2011, Nexus Care has been hard at work helping vulnerable people in Brisbane.

Take a read of our latest reports to see a snapshot of our work.

FRESH START FOOD PROGRAM

Healthy Food Parcels

Our flagship program began in 2011 as local research and studies clearly showed a lack of relief providers in the greater North Brisbane region. Nexus Care seeks to fill that gap and meet that need with dignity and excellence - a signature of all we stand for.

Now, we are supplying over 5,000 nutritious food parcels annually to local Brisbane families.

Nexus Care is able to keep growing with the need thanks to fantastic community organisations, generous donors, and a talented staff and volunteer team.

Healthy food parcels are available to those experiencing hardship in greater North and North-West Brisbane and are available at Everton Park and Sandgate.

SCHOOL BREAKFAST PROGRAM

1 IN 5 AUSSIE KIDS START THE DAY WITHOUT ACCESS TO BREKKY

To help overcome this stunning statistic, Nexus Care’s Brekky Club provides a nourishing breakfast to over 500 school kids every week in Brisbane’s north.

Our Brekky Clubbers not only aim to provide nutritious food options, but the team aims to proactively and positively engage with the students to cultivate belonging and fun. We see vulnerable children being able to access food freely, without being obviously identified amongst peers, which significantly benefits a child's ability to belong and learn well.

Thanks to these fantastic school communities for having us!

in-KIND Business Partners

  • Nexus Care receives regular donated food from Oz Harvest, SecondBite, and Foodbank, we also distribute meals from FareShare Brisbane and Meals On Wheels Mitchelton which contributes to our Fresh Start Food Program.

The majority of our bread is donated by Woolworths North West Plaza, Woolworths Chermside West, Woolworths Sandgate, and Banneton Bakery & Cafe, Ashgrove.

We have a wonderful partnership with Share the Dignity which donates sanitary items three times a year, which we distribute. In December they provide "It’s in the Bag" handbags filled with treats that align with our annual Christmas Appeal and are handed out with our Christmas hampers.

    From Foodbank:
Foodbank Queensland is proud to support Nexus Care to ensure Queenslanders in need have access to food when they need it most. As the largest hunger relief charity in the state, Foodbank Queensland sources millions of kilograms of food from farmers, manufacturers, and retailers, and distributes this food to hundreds of frontline charities every year. Working together, we can give food and hope to those going without across our state.

  • Rode Meats supplies our fresh meat and Vegie Express supplies our eggs. We also shop at our local Aldi stores for the majority of our staple ingredients.

  • Additionally, local families regularly donate exceptional home-grown produce (including honey!), and Nexus Church members often contribute various staple ingredients.

Career Coaching SERVICES

An array of professional coaching services to see vulnerable participants empowered to find and secure employment in Brisbane.

These services began in 2020 when the pandemic exposed a gap of people in crisis unable to access any government support. Because of generous supporters, Nexus Care was positioned to do something about it and together a team created a program informed by 45 years of HR experience in Australia. This program created pathways for people who were marginalised and in hardship, empowering them to get back on their feet and provide for themselves.

Now, these services are reporting an outstanding 53% success rate and more importantly, are seeing people’s lives (and their families) radically changed.

CAREER COACHING SERVICES INCLUDE:

1-ON-1 CLINICS

This one-on-one program journeys with guests to upskill and build confidence in finding and securing a job through regular, personalised coaching sessions.

Our Clinics not only mentor a person to overcome barriers but advocate for sustainable employment outcomes that changes the trajectory of a person’s future.

Sessions for each guest include exploring what jobs fit their skillset, identifying challenges, developing a cover letter and resume, support in applying for jobs and coaching towards desired employment outcomes.

Workplace English Classes

Classes are designed to strengthen the English language skills needed for finding and securing work in Australia.

Complementing the Career Coaching program, classes offer practical sessions that explore and practice English skills needed for the workplace. Guests hold conversations, roleplay interview questions and practice written skills to empower them in finding employment.

These employment-focused classes are ideal for people from non-English speaking backgrounds and are designed to teach foundational skills in the English language to prepare for work in Australia. In true Nexus Care form, the tailored curriculum is delivered with dignity and to a high standard.

Job Clubs

Job Clubs offer practical one-on-one support in job searching, writing job applications in particular cover letters and selection criteria responses, and preparing for interviews.

A huge thanks to a talented team of staff and volunteers that make English Classes and Job Club both sustainable and accessible to those in need.

These free classes are run fortnightly during school terms at Everton Park.

EMERGENCY FINANCIAL RELIEF

We meet weekly with people who are in a crisis and are struggling to pay or to access essential items, like medicine, transportation, electricity or internet.

This program is largely funded by the Department of Social Services, so there is eligibility criteria to meet.

This service is available in Everton Park and Sandgate.

Because of our generous supporters, Nexus Care on occasion may be able to extend support where an extreme crisis is prevailing that impacts a person or their family.

Nexus Care highly values feedback to ensure we are offering the highest standard of service to our community. Nexus Care is committed to creating a culture whereby feedback is encouraged, recognised and consistently captured.

If you have any feedback whether it’s a compliment, suggestion or a complaint, you can contact us by phone, email, letter or via our Feedback Form. If a suggestion or a complaint, we will endeavour to resolve the problem as quickly as possible.
